Telephone follow-up as a substitute for standard out-clinic follow-up in CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea patients: a randomized controlled trial.

This study assessed the feasibility of telephone follow-up consultations (TC) using an online data sharing and editing function (Airview™), as alternative to standard out-clinic follow-up consultations (SC) on adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Furthermore, we investigated compliance to follow-up consultations and examined potential influencing factors, including baseline AHI (apnea-hypopnea-index), age, and distance from home to the hospital on consultation compliance. Two hundred OSA patients, with AHI 5 were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive TC or SC with follow-up after one month and 12month of CPAP initiation. Adherence goal was defined as achieving 4h of CPAP use daily in 70% of the days in a 365-days period. The proportion of participants achieving CPAP adherence was non-significantly lower in the TC group compared to the SC group (TC: 30% versus SC: 36%, adjusted OR 0.84, p = 0.59). Of participants who completed the study, the TC group had a significant average of 107min less use of CPAP compared to the SC group (p = 0.048). However, a higher proportion of participants was compliant to consultations in the TC group. The only influencing factor found was increasing baseline AHI, which might be a predictor for compliance to consultationsand adherence to CPAP therapy. TC might serve as substitute for SC in some part of the OSA population. If TC becomes a part of CPAP therapy management, it is important to consider patient characteristics and treatment-related issues to prevent decline in adherence.

Extended optical treatment versus early patching with an intensive patching regimen in children with amblyopia in Europe (EuPatch): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial

Amblyopia, the most common visual impairment of childhood, is a public health concern. An extended period of optical treatment before patching is recommended by the clinical guidelines of several countries. The aim of this study was to compare an intensive patching regimen, with and without extended optical treatment (EOT), in a randomised controlled trial. EuPatch was a randomised controlled trial conducted in 30 hospitals in the UK, Greece, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Children aged 3-8 years with newly detected, untreated amblyopia (defined as an interocular difference ≥0·30 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR] best corrected visual acuity [BCVA]) due to anisometropia, strabismus, or both were eligible. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) via a computer-generated sequence to either the EOT group (18 weeks of glasses use before patching) or to the early patching group (3 weeks of glasses use before patching), stratified for type and severity of amblyopia. All participants were initially prescribed an intensive patching regimen (10 h/day, 6 days per week), supplemented with motivational materials. The patching period was up to 24 weeks. Participants, parents or guardians, assessors, and the trial statistician were not masked to treatment allocation. The primary outcome was successful treatment (ie, ≤0·20 logMAR interocular difference in BCVA) after 12 weeks of patching. Two primary analyses were conducted: the main analysis included all participants, including those who dropped out, but excluded those who did not provide outcome data at week 12 and remained on the study; the other analysis imputed this missing data. All eligible and randomly assigned participants were assessed for adverse events. This study is registered with the International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number registry (ISRCTN51712593) and is no longer recruiting. Between June 20, 2013, and March 12, 2020, after exclusion of eight participants found ineligible after detailed screening, we randomly assigned 334 participants (170 to the EOT group and 164 to the early patching group), including 188 (56%) boys, 146 (44%) girls, and two (1%) participants whose sex was not recorded. 317 participants (158 in the EOT group and 159 in the early patching group) were analysed for the primary outcome without imputation of missing data (median follow-up time 42 weeks [IQR 42] in the EOT group vs 27 weeks [27] in the early patching group). 24 (14%) of 170 participants in the EOT group and ten (6%) of 164 in the early patching group were excluded or dropped out of the study, mostly due to loss to follow-up and withdrawal of consent; ten (6%) in the EOT group and three (2%) in the early patching group missed the 12 week visit but remained on the study. A higher proportion of participants in the early patching group had successful treatment (107 [67%] of 159) than those in the EOT group (86 [54%] of 158; 13% difference; p=0·019) after 12 weeks of patching. No serious adverse events related to the interventions occurred. The results from this trial indicate that early patching is more effective than EOT for the treatment of most children with amblyopia. The influence of home versus clinic anal human papillomavirus sampling on high-resolution anoscopy uptake in the Prevent Anal Cancer Self-Swab Study.

Background Anal cancer disproportionately affects sexual and gender minority individuals living with HIV. High-resolution anoscopy (HRA) is an in-clinic procedure to detect precancerous anal lesions and cancer, yet prospective data on factors associated with HRA attendance are lacking. We examined whether anal HPV sampling at home versus in a clinic impacts HRA uptake and assessed HRA acceptability. Methods Sexual and gender minority individuals were randomised to home-based self-sampling or clinical sampling. All were asked to attend in-clinic HRA 1year later. We regressed HRA attendance on study arm using multivariable Poisson regression and assessed HRA acceptability using χ 2 tests. Results A total of 62.8% of 196 participants who engaged in screening attended HRA. Although not significant (P =0.13), a higher proportion of participants who engaged in clinic-based screening attended HRA (68.5%) compared to home-based participants (57.9%). Overall, HRA uptake was higher among participants with anal cytology history (aRR 1.40, 95% CI 1.07-1.82), and lower among participants preferring a versatile anal sex position versus insertive (aRR 0.70, 95% CI 0.53-0.91), but did not differ by race or HIV serostatus. In the clinic arm, persons living with HIV had lower HRA attendance (42.9%) versus HIV-negative participants (73.3%) (P =0.02) and Black non-Hispanic participants had lower HRA attendance (41.7%) than White non-Hispanic participants (73.1%), (P =0.04). No differences in attendance by race or HIV status were observed in the home arm. Conclusions HRA uptake differed significantly by race and HIV status in the clinic arm but not the home arm.

Racial Differences in Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke: An Ecological Epidemiological Study.

This study aimed to evaluate racial differences in the incidence of stroke by conducting an ecological epidemiological study using UK Biobank and Korean nationwide data. This study used individual data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening and UK Biobank, which included participants who underwent health examinations between 2006 and 2010. We included 112,750 East Asians (50.7% men, mean age: 52.6 years) and 210,995 Caucasians (44.7% men, mean age: 55.0 years) who were not diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or cancer. The primary outcome was defined as a composite of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. East Asians tended to have a lower body mass index (23.7 vs. 26.4 kg/m2, p < 0.001) and a higher proportion of participants who did not engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (49.6% vs. 10.7%, p < 0.001) than Caucasians. During the follow-up, East Asians had higher 5-year incidence rates (presented as per 1,000 person-years) for primary outcome (1.73 vs. 0.50; IR ratio [IRR]: 3.48, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.13-3.88), ischemic stroke (1.23 vs. 0.33; IRR: 3.70, 95% CI: 3.25-4.21), hemorrhagic stroke (0.56 vs. 0.18; IRR: 3.20, 95% CI: 2.67-3.84), and atrial fibrillation-related stroke (0.19 vs. 0.09; IRR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.55-2.68). Based on this ecological epidemiological study, racial differences in stroke incidence were robust to a variety of statistical analyses, regardless of the subtype. This suggests the need for region-specific approaches to stroke prevention.

IJCM_7A: Anxiety and Insomnia among the Medical students during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Mangalore

Background: Interrupted classes which gradually shifted to online mode isolating students from their friends during the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health status of the medical students. Objective: To assess the mental health outcomes among the health science students in Mangalore and the factors associated with these outcomes. Methodology: This cross-sectional study included 295 health science students of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. The sample size was calculated based on a study from Morocco, where 62.3% of the medical students experienced anxiety-related symptoms. Anxiety was assessed using the Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale and Insomnia using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). The questionnaire was prepared in google forms and a link was generated which was disseminated to the students via social media platforms. Results: A higher proportion (n=179, 60.7%) of the participants in our study were females. In our study, 59% (n=173) of the participants had symptoms related to insomnia and 66% of the participants had anxiety-related symptoms. A higher proportion of participants who had anxiety-related symptoms were younger than 20 years of age, were females, belonged to MBBS course, and were not living with their family. However, none of the factors were found to be statistically significant. (P&gt;0.05) Conclusion: The mental health status of the participants in our study was poor with the majority of the participants reporting symptoms of anxiety and insomnia.

How a 5-Day Stay in the Tobacco-Free Environment of the Stoptober House Supports Individuals to Quit Smoking: A Mixed Methods Pilot Study

Introduction: The Stoptober House is part of the annual national Stoptober smoking cessation campaign in the Netherlands. During the first week of October, 48 volunteers resided in the tobacco-free Stoptober House for 5 days and received smoking cessation counseling. This pilot study explored how the Stoptober House may have facilitated smoking cessation among participants. Methods: We included 48 individuals who were selected for the Stoptober House (intervention group) and 67 individuals who were not selected (control group). Surveys were conducted at baseline, immediately after 2 and 8 weeks of post-intervention. We compared self-reported abstinence, psychosocial mediators related to smoking cessation, and perceived active elements of the Stoptober House between the intervention and control groups using t/χ² tests and linear mixed model (LMM) analysis. Sixteen semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted to explore participants’ perspectives on the elements contributing to their success in quitting smoking. Results: At 8 weeks of follow-up, a higher proportion of participants in the intervention group (24/48 [50%]) reported being abstinent compared to the control group (5/67 [7%]; p < 0.001). Among participants who reported making a quit attempt, 22/38 (57.9%) in the intervention group remained abstinent compared to 4/17 (23.5%) in the control group (p = 0.022). The intervention group also exhibited higher self-efficacy to quit smoking throughout the follow-up period and higher social support immediately after the Stoptober House. No significant differences were observed in other psychosocial factors. The interviews highlighted several perceived elements of the Stoptober House that contributed to smoking cessation success, including restricted smoking opportunities, access to smoking cessation counselors, and peer support. Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that the Stoptober House provides support that can help people quit smoking. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the cost-effectiveness of this intervention in promoting long-term abstinence among specific groups of smokers.

Peer Influence and Factors Associated with Personal Network Size of Underage Drinkers Recruited Through Respondent-driven Sampling 
in Dibrugarh District of Assam, India

Personal networks significantly contributed to initiating risky behaviours among emerging youth. The study aimed to assess the personal network characteristics and factors associated with the personal network size of underage alcohol users. 200 underage drinkers were recruited through respondent-driven sampling in Dibrugarh, Assam using five seeds. Transition probability matrices and homophily indices were used to describe underage drinkers’ network characteristics and network patterns. The weighted logistic regression model was performed to observe the association. Personal network size differed significantly with respect to demographic profile and alcohol consumption patterns of the respondents. A higher proportion of participants used cannabis (77.0%), drank for more than 3 years (40.7%) and liked to drink with peers (51.1%). The affiliation pattern of educational status shows a trend of homophily and interaction between new and older underage drinkers. Students (OR 3.17, 95% CI 1.32, 7.62) who like to drink with peers (OR 3.45, 95% CI 1.24, 9.62) were found significantly associated with larger personal network size in weighted multiple binary logistic regression. The findings will be helpful to understand the network pattern of underage drinkers. The study highlighted the need for effective prevention and intervention programmes for this population and suggested further research in this area.

Virtual pulmonary rehabilitation approaches in patients with post COVID syndrome: a pilot study

BackgroundThe characteristics of optimal virtual pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for individuals with post-COVID syndrome (PCS) have not been identified. This study aimed to assess the feasibility, safety, and satisfaction associated with a virtual PR program with the exercise component delivered through group or self-directed sessions.MethodsAdults with PCS-respiratory symptoms were randomly assigned to the video conference (PRVC) or self-directed (PRSD) group and completed an exercise program (aerobic, strengthening, and breathing exercises) three times/week for eight weeks. PRVC sessions were led by a physiotherapist via Zoom, whereas the PRSD group exercised individually following a pre-recorded video. Both groups received personalized exercise recommendations, education related to the condition, and a weekly follow up call. Satisfaction was assessed through a patient survey. Lung function, dyspnea, fatigue, sit-to-stand capacity, health-related quality of life, and participation were assessed pre- and post-PR.ResultsFourteen PCS individuals (49 ± 9 years, 86% females) completed 83% of the sessions. All participants were satisfied with information provided by the therapist and frequency of data submission, whereas most were satisfied with the frequency and duration of exercise sessions (88% in PRVC and 83% in PRSD). A higher proportion of participants in the PRVC (88%) were satisfied with the level of difficulty of exercises compared with the PRSD (67%), and 84% of the sample reported a positive impact of the program on their health. No adverse events were reported. Significant changes in sit-to-stand capacity (p = 0.012, Cohen’s r = 0.67) and questions related to fatigue (p = 0.027, Cohen’s r = 0.58), neurocognitive (p = 0.045, Cohen’s r = 0.53), and autonomic (p = 0.024, Cohen’s r = 0.60) domains of the DePaul Symptom Questionnaire short-form were also found between groups.ConclusionVirtual PR with exercises delivered via video conference or pre-recorded video were feasible, safe, and well-received by individuals with PCS.Trial registrationNCT05003271 (first posted: 12/08/2021).

Social-Economic Factors Affecting Accessibility to Sanitation and Hygiene Services Among People Living with Disabilities in Kitui County, Kenya

Persons living with disabilities refer to individuals with persistent mental, physical, sensory or intellectual deterioration while interacting with varied barriers may prevent equal participation in society compared to other population. People living with disabilities (PLWD) are greater than five times probable to be found in the position of being unable to access sanitation and hygiene services as compared to normal people in the same community. There are significant gaps and limited knowledge in implementation of WASH policies across the country. This study aimed was to determine the social-economic factors affecting accessibility to sanitation and hygiene services among PLWD in Kitui County, Kenya. The study employed a cross sectional survey method. Socio-economic status indicated a high proportion of participants with limited education (51.1% with no formal education, 35.2% with primary education), and a pervasive low income (98.6% earning less than 10,000) and unemployment (85.3%). Socio-economic variables, including occupation (B = -0.212, p = 0.032), income (B = -1.068, p = 0.184), and education level (B = 0.457, p &lt; 0.001), exhibited notable associations. This study identified substantial challenges hindering people with disabilities (PLWD) from accessing adequate sanitation and hygiene, revealing critical issues related to socio-economic factors, physical and environmental barriers, communication gaps, and institutional shortcomings.

Relationship between body mass index and cardiometabolic health in a multi-ethnic population: A project baseline health study

ObjectiveObesity is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Understanding the associations between comprehensive health parameters and body mass index (BMI) may lead to targeted prevention efforts. MethodsProject Baseline Health Study (PBHS) participants were divided into six BMI categories: underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2), class I obesity (30–34.9 kg/m2), class II obesity (35–39.9 kg/m2), and class III obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m2). Demographic, cardiometabolic, mental health, and physical health parameters were compared across BMI categories, and multivariable logistic regression models were fit to evaluate associations. ResultsA total of 2,493 PBHS participants were evaluated. The mean age was 50±17.2 years; 55 % were female, 12 % Hispanic, 16 % Black, and 10 % Asian. The average BMI was 28.4 kg/m2±6.9. The distribution of BMI by age group was comparable to the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset. The obesity categories had higher proportions of participants with CAC scores >0, hypertension, diabetes, lower HDL-C, lower vitamin D, higher triglycerides, higher hsCRP, lower mean step counts, higher mean PHQ-9 scores, and higher mean GAD-7 scores. ConclusionWe identified associations of cardiometabolic and mental health characteristics with BMI, thereby providing a deeper understanding of cardiovascular health across BMI.

Are Dentists Hypocrites? Oral Self-care Habits and Self-reported Oral Health Status among Dentists and Non-dentists in Croatia.

Dentists provide dental care to their patients and educate them on their oral hygiene and how to maintain oral health. This paper aimed to determine whether dentists are hypocritical when advising their patients on oral hygiene procedures and dental treatments because they do not apply to themselves what they recommend to others. This is a self-reported study conducted through an online survey questionnaire completed by 1001 participants, of whom 551 were non-dentists and 450 dentists. This is the first study on oral hygiene habits and oral status among dentists in Croatia. This research included almost 10% of the total number of working dentists in Croatia. In terms of dental hygiene habits, dentists brushed, flossed and used interdental brushes more frequently, and they also changed toothbrushes more frequently, whereas they attended check-ups less frequently. Dentists also reported a smaller number of teeth with cavities, a greater number of teeth with fillings, a greater number of extracted teeth, and a greater number of dental crowns, but a smaller number of healthy teeth compared to general population. However, dentists had a much higher proportion of participants over 30 years of age, and when sub-analysis of participants over 30 years of age was performed, dentists had a greater number of healthy teeth compared to the general population. The results showed that dentists are aware of the importance of their oral health and that they do not pay attention only to their oral hygiene habits, but also apply advice they give their patients. Therefore, they cannot be considered hypocritical.

Durability of COVID-19 humoral immunity post infection and different SARS-COV-2 vaccines

BackgroundThe global challenge posed by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been a major concern for the healthcare sector in recent years. Healthcare workers have a relatively high risk of encountering COVID-19 patients, making protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2 is a priority for them. This study aims to evaluate the longitudinal measurement of SARS-CoV-2 IgG spike protein antibodies in healthcare workers (HCWs) after COVID-19 infection and after receiving the first and second doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, including Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) and Oxford-AstraZeneca (AZD1222). MethodsThis longitudinal cohort study involved 311 healthcare workers working in two tertiary hospitals in Saudi Arabia. All participants were followed between July 2020 and July 2022 after completing the study questionnaire. A total of 3 ml of the blood samples were collected at four intervals: before/after vaccination. ResultsHCWs post-infection had lower mean SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels three months post-infection than post-vaccination. 92.2% had positive IgG levels two weeks after the first dose and reached 100% after the second dose. Over 98% had positive antibodies nine months after the second dose, regardless of vaccine type. The number of neutralizing antibodies decreased and was around 50% at nine months after the second dose. ConclusionThe results show different antibody patterns between infected and vaccinated HCWs. A high proportion of participants had positive antibodies after vaccination, with high levels persisting nine months after the second dose. Neutralizing antibodies decreased over time, with only about 50% of participants having positive antibodies nine months after the second dose. These results contribute to our understanding of immunity in healthcare workers and highlight the need for the continuous monitoring and possible booster strategies.

Symptoms, Mental Health, and Quality of Life Among Patients After COVID-19 Infection: A Cross-sectional Study in Vietnam.

This study was conducted to characterize the symptoms, mental health, quality of life (QoL), and associated factors following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. This cross-sectional study included 394 participants previously infected with COVID-19 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Mental health was assessed using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Participants self-reported health-related QoL was measured with the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) scale. Among the participants, 76.4% reported experiencing at least one symptom following COVID-19 infection. The most common symptoms were fatigue (42.1%), cognitive dysfunction (42.9%), and hair loss (27.9%). According to the DASS-21 results, the proportions of depression, anxiety, and stress were 28.7%, 26.4%, and 20.6%, respectively. The mean scores on the EQ-5D-5L and the EuroQol Visual Analog Scale were 0.94±0.11 and 84.20±13.11, respectively. Regarding QoL issues, the highest proportion of participants (32.7%) reported experiencing anxiety or depression, followed by pain or discomfort (25.4%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that factors associated with the presence of symptoms following COVID-19 infection included female (odds ratio [OR], 2.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.65 to 4.91) and having QoL issues (OR, 3.25; 95% CI, 1.71 to 6.19). The study investigated the prevalence rates of various symptoms following COVID-19 infection. These findings underscore the need to prioritize comprehensive care for individuals recovering from COVID-19 and to implement strategies to mitigate the long-term impact of the disease on mental health and QoL.

To what extent the weight changes impact the risk of hypertension among menopausal women: insights from Tehran lipid and glucose study

Background & aimThe association between weight change and incident hypertension (HTN) in menopausal women has not been well characterized. This study aimed to determine whether weight changes after menopausal years make a difference in incidents of hypertension.Materials & methodsThis population-based study was performed using data collected from Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study cohort (1999–2018). Women who had natural and early menopause were followed up every 3 years. Data gathering was performed through the standard protocol of the study. Statistical analysis was performed using multivariable Cox hazard regression analysis. We used the ‘survival’ package in the R software version 3.6.0 to fit survival models.ResultsA total of 487 menopausal women met the inclusion criteria; 62.6% had natural menopause and remained had early menopause. Among the participants, 65.5% experienced HTN. The highest proportion of participants had > 5% weight gain, while the lowest had 3–5% weight gain. Either losing body weight (lost > 5%: HR: 0.44; CI 95%, 0.32, 0.62; p < 0.001), (lost 3–5%; HR: 0.47; CI 95%, 0.26, 0.84; p = 0.01), and weight gain > 5% (HR: 0.69; CI 95%, 0.51, 0.91; p = 0.01), were associated with decreased risk of HTN after adjustment for confounders. In this study, weight loss and gain have a protective impact on the development of HTN in subjects. For incident HTN, age (HR: 1.04 (1.01, 1.08), p = 0.004), fasting blood glucose (HR: 1.01, CI 95%:1.00, 1.01; p < 0.001), body mass index (1.02 (1.00, 1.05), p = 0.03) and smoking (1.70 (1.11, 2.58), p = 0.01) were positively associated with HTN.ConclusionsOur study indicates the significant association of weight change with hypertension risk in later life among menopausal women.

Cardiovascular risk factors and carotid intima-media thickness with neurocognitive dysfunction in people living with HIV on stable combination anti-retroviral therapy

The goal of this clinical research was to determine the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), cardiovascular risk factors, and neuro-cognitive function in people living with HIV (PLHIV) and were on stable combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART). This is a cross-sectional study performed at a single center, including 149 patients who visited the anti-retroviral therapy center of our tertiary care hospital. Among the PLHIV of our research, 62.4% had at least one associated cardiovascular risk factor, and 61.1% of them had abnormally high cIMT (≥ 0.9 mm on any one side, p = 0.035). These factors and being the male gender (p = 0.028) were associated with a greater Framingham 10-year risk percentage. Hypercholesterolemia was observed in 30.9% of the PLHIV and a higher body mass index (≥ 25 kg/m2) was found in 26.8% of them. The cognitive impairment was milder in 71.8% of cases and moderate in 9.4% of PLHIV. The Chi-square test revealed that a higher proportion of participants who had lower HDL-C levels (p = 0.045), smokers (p = 0.029), systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg (p = 0.012), and lower educational status (p = 0.017) had a poorer cognitive performance. In our sample population, a higher prevalence of elevated cIMT, cardiovascular risk factors, and mild and moderate cognitive deficiency was observed in PLHIV, who were on stable cART. However, routine assessment of the neuropsychological functions and management of modifiable risk factors are not performed in our patients. Further exploration of the relationship between cardiovascular risks, cIMT, and cognitive impairment in PLHIV is essential to formulate the guidelines and delay the onset of neurocognitive disorders in these patients.

The Incidence of Pelvic and Low Back Pain in Patients with Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

To define the prevalence and incidence of pelvic/low back pain in patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Patients presenting for POP to three urogynecology centers in the US, UK, and Chile were enrolled in an IRB-approved cross-sectional study assessing pain, GU, GI and sexual function symptoms. For prevalence, symptoms were noted as present if the participant recorded the symptom and reported the degree of bother as "somewhat," "a moderate amount," or "a lot." For incidence, participants were queried if the symptom's onset concurred with the POP. We also queried if they perceived the symptom was worsened by their POP. Two hundred five participants were recruited: 100 from the US, 46 from the UK, and 59 from Chile. One US participant was excluded due a missing examination. The prevalence of pelvic pain was 42%. Seventy-three percent of these participants reported the onset of pelvic pain coinciding with prolapse onset, and 81% endorsed worsening pelvic pain with POP. The prevalence of low back pain was 46%, with 30% reporting the onset coincided with the onset of POP and 44% responded that prolapse worsened their pain. A higher proportion of participants than expected endorsed pelvic/low back pain. Among patients with pelvic pain, the majority experienced symptom onset with POP onset and a worsening of pain with POP. While roughly half of participants reported low back pain; a minority correlated this to their POP. These findings highlight a high incidence of pelvic pain, challenging the perception of POP as a painless condition.

Comparison of Participation in Strength Activity Among People With and Without Disabilities: 2013-2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

The current physical activity guidelines recommend engagement in strength activities at least 2 days per week. Currently, there is a lack of literature examining strength activities among people with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to estimate and compare the prevalence of engagement in strength activities and adherence to strength activity guidelines among adults with and without disabilities in the United States. A total of 1,005,644 adults (18-80y old) with and without disabilities from the 2013 to 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were included in this secondary data analysis. Descriptive analyses were performed to describe the prevalence of strength activity behaviors of adults with and without disabilities. Logistic and Poisson regression models were performed to evaluate the relative contribution of disability status on strength activity behaviors. A higher proportion of participants without disabilities (46.42%, 95% CI, 46.18-46.65) reported engaging in strength activities compared with participants with disabilities (30.68%, 95% CI, 30.29-31.08; P < .01). Participants with disabilities were less likely to engage in strength activities (odds ratio = 0.51, 95% CI, 0.50-0.52; adjusted odds ratio = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.73-0.77) and meet strength activity guidelines (odds ratio = 0.56, 95% CI, 0.54-0.57; adjusted odds ratio = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.73-0.77) than participants without disabilities. Experiencing a disability is associated with lower engagement in strength activities; thus, it is important to identify effective and efficient approaches to promoting strength activities among people with disabilities.

RELAÇÃO QUANTITATIVA ENTRE ATIVIDADE FÍSICA E ANTI-HIPERTENSIVOS EM IDOSAS

ABSTRACT Introduction: Physical activity is an important tool to manage systemic arterial hypertension. However, less is known about the relationship of physical activity with the number of antihypertensive drugs used by older adults. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the number of antihypertensive drugs used by older female adults (aged ≥ 60 years) with a low level of physical activity with the number used by those with a high level of physical activity, and to verify how many participants used more than two antihypertensive drugs. Methods: Twenty-eight physically active older women with systemic arterial hypertension who participated in a physical activity program for community-dwelling older female adults were divided into two groups: participants who presented lower habitual physical activity levels were placed in group 1 and participants that presented higher habitual physical activity levels were placed in group 2, according to the Baecke questionnaire. In addition, the number of antihypertensive drugs used by participants was collected. Results: The number of prescribed antihypertensive drugs was 2.0 (median) for both groups investigated. There was no significant difference between groups regarding the number of antihypertensive tablets prescribed (p&gt;0.05). Although there was no statistical difference, a higher proportion of participants from the lower physical activity group used more than two antihypertensive drugs. Conclusion: The level of habitual physical activity did not affect the number of antihypertensive tablets used by hypertensive elderly women. COMPARING EARLIER- VERSUS LATER-BORN CENTENARIAN COHORTS FROM THE HEALTH AND RETIREMENT STUDY

Abstract The current study aimed to compare the health status of earlier and later born centenarian cohorts. Using the data from the Health and Retirement Study, we selected those who survived to at least 98 years and divided them into earlier (n=189) and later (n=304) cohorts. The birth year of the earlier cohort ranged from 1890 to 1906, and the birth year of the later cohort ranged from 1907 to 1920. We first recoded variables to examine health status when all participants were at least 98 years old. To explore differences in health status between earlier vs. later cohorts, we computed t-tests/χ2 difference tests with activities of daily living, depressive symptoms, self-report of health and health change (SRHC), BMI, current smoking, drinking, cognition, and a number of diseases. There were significant differences in depressive symptoms, SRHC, high blood pressure, and current drinking between the earlier and later centenarian cohorts. The later cohort had significantly higher blood pressure, more depressive symptoms, worse SRHC, and later cohorts had a higher proportion of participants who currently consumed alcohol. Finally, the results of two separate regression analyses predicting depressive symptoms indicated that no demographic or health variables of the earlier cohort significantly predicted depressive symptoms, but years of education and current diagnosis of cancer significantly predicted depressive symptoms for the later cohort. Overall, the later born cohort had a worse health status compared to the earlier born cohort. This findings highlights the need for healthcare providers to pay attention to psychological health among cancer-diagnosed centenarians.

Health behaviors and mental health among adolescents: A comparison based on BMI using the 2021 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Obesity and underweight can have adverse effects on adolescents. However, previous obesity management program conducted in Korea for adolescents with obesity showed low effectiveness, and there are few studies on underweight Korean adolescents. This study aims to analyze differences in the health behaviors and mental health of adolescents based on their body mass index (BMI). Data from the 2021 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey were examined. The health behaviors and mental health of 53,445 adolescents were analyzed according to BMI using SAS version 9.4 with the Rao-Scott χ2 test and logistic regression analysis. Regarding the difference in health behaviors according to BMI, a higher proportion of participants who are drinking alcohol and are exposed to secondhand smoke were in the underweight group than in the obesity group. The rate of obesity among those engaged in physical activity was higher than that among those involved in non-physical activity. In addition, the obesity group used smartphones more than the underweight group, while the quality of sleep was better among the underweight group than the obesity group. While the health behaviors and mental health of adolescents according to BMI are similar to those of previous studies, there are also distinct aspects. Consequently, further exploration of health behaviors and mental health based on BMI is crucial for developing and implementing targeted nursing intervention programs for adolescents with different weights.
